Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency Program

PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. The 12 month residency program at PHS is designed for residents to gain exposure to varied areas of pharmacy practice in a community hospital setting. Residents will monitor and manage patient care regimens, round with physicians and interdisciplinary teams, present drug monographs and medication use evaluations at P&T, gather and disseminate drug information, present patient cases and journal clubs to pharmacy staff, present a Fall/Spring educational seminar and develop pharmacy management skills including process improvements. Residents will also conduct an original research project, help precept students from pharmacy schools in Tennessee and Georgia and participate in the staffing and distribution of pharmacy services. We also require participation in a teaching and learning certificate program for completion of the residency program. Residents will have the opportunity to attend ASHP Midyear meeting, TSHP Winter meeting, and the Southeastern Residency Conference for research presentation purposes and networking.
